Before you go
Two minutes with your hands.
Most gun dogs start the season a point heavy. Body Condition Scoring, the field version, tells you where your dog is before the season decides. One email, and it opens here.

The science · The handler's track
Pocket GPS is hard.
The satellites don't see the phone in your pocket well. That is true for every app. What we do about it is different: KENAI never passes off ground you didn't walk as ground you did.
The same walk, two ways.
Halfway through, the phone went quiet in a vest pocket. Most apps connect the dots with a solid line. KENAI shows you the gap and measures it.
1.6 miThe phone went quiet in your pocket. A solid line jumps the drainage, and the miles you walked around it are gone.
2.1 miThe gap is drawn dotted, so you know. Its distance comes from your steps.
Drag to compare. An illustration over real ground (USGS imagery, Flint Hills, Kansas), not a live reading.
What we do about it.
The bridge
A dotted line, never a solid one
When the phone goes quiet, KENAI draws the gap as a dotted line, so you can always see which ground was heard and which was bridged.
Steps
The gap, measured by your steps
On phones that count steps, the bridge is measured by the steps you took in the gap and a stride learned from the same hunt. Too few steps for the distance means you rode, and the gap is not counted as walked.
Checks
A bridge has to earn it
A bridge needs a solid fix on both sides of the gap. It is refused if it would mean moving faster than a person walks, or crossing more than half a mile.
One number
Every mile, the same way
The map and the season totals read the same measured distance. The miles are the handler's, never the dog's.
What we won't do.
Never
Invent a path
We don't guess the route you took around the drainage. We show the gap and measure it.
Never
Blame your settings
Pocket GPS is hard, and we say so. If the data is missing, we say the data is missing.
How we checked it.
Every walk that ever fooled us is kept in a test library. Nothing in the tracker changes unless it passes all of them.
Of the full walk: the bar a pocketed walk measured by steps has to hit in the test library.
Different noise patterns every test runs against, so a lucky pass can't sneak through.
Failures deleted to make a change pass. A walk that fooled us once stays in the library.
Walk it. It counts.
Record the hunt with the phone in your pocket. The miles, the time, and the climb are yours, measured honestly.
